There's a million and a half people on the main instance, that's not a short number, yet OP has trouble finding hits for Star Wars. I've had conversation on star wars within discord servers not dedicated to star wars, with less than 50 people. The number of people isn't the problem. It's the discovery tools. They suck. Outright, objectively suck.

We had 70-odd followers, and a pretty healthy follow-back ratio. However, the record that was left on Mastodon.art showed 12—somehow 50 or so were unfollowed. Having been on Mastodon.art for five years, we doubt there was any manipulation, but the software may have operated in a way to do some kind of mass unfollow in the event of suspension.
I've tried swtiching servers and it does seem like a headache, so ideally I'd get on a "large" server that seems like it would be more likely to stick around for the long term, and the "flagship" instances of the actual Mastodon nonprofit organization seem like would be the logical route for longevity.
